The Staffordshire Bull Terrier often fondly referred to as the Staffy does everything full throttle; play, exercise, eat and adore! They are intelligent yet stubborn and when trained and socialised from an early age they make truly wonderful companions.

A British breed, developed by crossing the Bulldog with various local terriers, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred for dog-fighting purposes. These fights took place in specially constructed pits, often situated in public house yards, and vast amounts of money were wagered on the outcome of these bouts. Today the Staffy has grown into a kind and friendly dog, although they still have the inherent tendency to be aggressive with other dogs.

Temperament

The Staffy is loyal, loving and generally a quiet, stable and trustworthy companion. It is important to remember that they were originally bred to be a fighting dog. This sometimes shows in their boisterous nature and in some circumstances a tendency to be aggressive with other dogs. They are suitable for being the only dog in the household or can live happily with other pets if socialized and given the correct obedience training at a young age. Puppy socialisation should include interaction with other dogs and with children.

Grooming and care

The short coat sheds rarely and requires little more than a regular brush and bath (not more than once a fortnight).

Exercise

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are not a breed to be left alone for long periods of time. They love being with the family and require a daily walk for at least 20 minutes.
